Should Your Business Be Using Google+?

March 27, 2015

Many have Google+laughed at Google’s attempt to break into the social media world with Google+, so it may come as shock to find out that the web giant’s social offering actually has 300 million active users. If you aren’t already doing so, it might be a good time to start tapping into the Google+ power!

Generally, most businesses know that their consumers are not using Google+ in the same way they use Facebook and Twitter, so tend to either leave it alone or treat it as an afterthought. However, this could be a huge mistake as it is much more than a social network; an active and complete Google+ business profile can help you move into a higher position in your search rankings.

Some businesses have even reported better results from Google+ than they managed to achieve with paid advertisements. This is due to the way Google works- if you manage to word it right, your Google+ post should show up in the search when people look for your company or industry. By getting your wording right, it makes it almost free advertising for your business.

3 tips to make the most of your company’s presence on Google+

Okay, so you get that Google+ is more important than you first realised, but what can you do now?

Google+ ProfileMake sure you complete your profile

Before rushing into planning a content posting strategy, you should fill out as much information as you possibly can in your profile.

Think of it like this; anywhere you can add information about your company will make your Google+ profile more relevant. This is because it lets you give your customers information such as what services you offer, your opening times, your website, contact information and so on. By leaving these details out, you might miss an opportunity because someone thinks you aren’t online or open.

If you, as the company, don’t tell Google, then how will Google know?

Ask your customers to write reviews

This can be a double edged sword – it makes your company look more trustworthy, but it could produce some negative feedback.

However, generally, you are better to ask for reviews as it should help your company’s SEO in the long term. It is always important to respond to any criticism you receive in a polite and courteous manner. Remember that 9 times out 10, the positive reviews outweigh the negative ones.

Make use of Circles and Hangouts

If you are unsure of these Google terms, the simplest definitions are:

  • Circle = group of people
  • Hangout = Video chat service

The benefits of these features are that you can reach a targeted audience and help make your company stand out as a brand authority.

Google+ Circles can be used to reach certain groups of people. Any content will be included in the Google search results if a member of your circles looks for keywords that are relevant to your posts. You can also use this to your advantage when delivering high specialised and relevant content that you know will get high levels of engagement.

Hangouts_IconGoogle Hangouts are almost an alternative to Skype, as they can be used for things such as Q&A sessions, online video workshops, exclusive announcements and online teaching sessions, which can cement your company’s position as an expert within your field.
